CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER® · SPRUCE GROVE, ALBERTA
I’m Derek Schaefer, a Financial Planner working with Canadian families and business owners to build clear, purpose-driven financial strategies. My focus is on philanthropic financial planning, legacy planning, and financial planning that considers the tax implications of every decision—helping clients align their financial decisions with what matters most to them.
After studying at MacEwan University and NAIT, completing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance, I built my career around helping clients simplify complex financial situations and make confident long-term decisions. My approach is grounded in education, clarity, and practical planning, so clients understand not just what we’re doing, but why it matters.
Before working independently and starting Northern Asset Management, I worked in banking and insurance environments, gaining experience in investments, legacy planning, and risk management. Today, I work closely with families and businesses to create financial plans that are easy to understand, implement, and adapt over time.
A core part of my practice is philanthropic financial planning. I believe wealth is not only about what you build, but how you use it. By incorporating charitable giving into financial and legacy planning strategies, I help clients support the causes they care about while considering the tax implications of their giving and its long-term impact.

If you’ve ever wondered about the voice on the other end of the line, meet Ashton! She brings a wonderful global energy to our small team, courtesy of her Australian roots and a deep love for travel. Because family means everything to us here, Ashton fits right in - when she’s off the clock, life is a fun, busy balancing act with her husband and two kids, usually involving packing everyone up for a weekend of hiking or heading out to the lake. As an avid reader and writer, she appreciates the unique details of every story. With Ashton, you’re getting someone who genuinely values community, family, and treating anyone who walks through our doors, like an extension of our own.

Kourtney Price
CLIENT SERVICE ASSISTANT
Hi everyone! It’s a pleasure to meet you. I recently joined the Northern Asset Management - Global Maxfin Investments team, and I’m excited to continue my journey in the finance industry while building meaningful relationships with clients and colleagues. Outside of work, you’ll often find me exploring Edmonton’s beautiful River Valley or planning my next adventure abroad. I’ve always believed in seeing the world with fresh eyes, and that sense of curiosity and optimism carries into both my personal life and my approach to work. Originally from beautiful British Columbia, I’m proud to now call Edmonton home. And if you’re a fellow animal lover, you’ll be happy to know I share my home with an adorable Holland Lop bunny who keeps life entertaining!
